Megafaunal Invertebrates of
Pacific Continental Shelf

Washington, Oregon, and California

The Benthic Ecology Lab at Washington State University Vancouver, under the direction of Dr. Brian Tissot, has been involved in several projects analyzing habitat and invertebrate distribution and associations on the Northeast Pacific continental shelf.  These projects use submersible and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) transects to analyze fish and invertebrate abundance along with analysis of the habitat with which these organisms are associated.  This provides data to aid in assessment of overfished stocks and defining essential fish habitat, along with exploring a relatively new technique for assessing fish abundance.

Although fish abundance and geologic mapping have been the main focus of these projects, invertebrates are just as exciting and important to the community.  We have compiled a list of invertebrates seen during these three projects, as well as spectacular images of them.

The following people have dedicated their time to these invertebrates:

Heceta Bank and Astoria Canyon: Noelani Puniwai, Kathy Greenwood, Keri York, Jodi Pirtle

Cowcod Conservation Areas: Keri York, Kathy Greenwood, Stephen Green

Cordell Bank: Jodi Pirtle

Invertebrate identification has been a collaborative effort among these employees and their resources (books and websites) and other people who have provided guidance and identification clarification: Sue Benech, Roger Clark, Mary Sue Brancato, Dave Montagne, and others.....
