Research focus: Ecology and Habitat Utilization of Reef Fish, Benthic Habitat Change and Mapping, Enhancing Marine Reserves, Coral Reef Ecology, Systematics, Marine Ecological Interactions, Conservation and Management of Fisheries and Coastal Resources.

Research

  • 2003-2004 Graduate Research Assistant. Washington State University Vancouver , WA .  Developed and conducted underwater video and bathymetry surveys for mapping of reef fish habitats on West Hawaii.   Coordinated  the data management of  the West Hawaii Aquarium monitoring project (WHAP).  Conducted benthic SCUBA surveys throughout the Big Island of Hawaii with WHAP and analyzed benthic videos and fish data for quality analysis and reserve function respectively.  Results were disseminated in scientific conferences.  Developed database of GIS and remote sensed data for the state of Hawaii.

  • 2001-2002 Database manager. California Academy of Sciences. Golden Gate Park San Francisco, CA.  Assisted in the development of a biotic database of Indo-Pacific marine mollusks with summary data on their distribution, ecology and taxonomy.

  • 2001 Master Thesis.  Conducted studies on phylogeny and ecological interactions between facelinid nudibranch genus Phyllodesmium and Indo-Pacific coelenterates.  Results were submitted for publication.

  • 2000-2001Graduate Assistant. California Academy of Sciences. Golden Gate Park San Francisco, CA. Research educator teaching and providing hands on experience to incoming young scientists on the taxonomy and ecology of Indo-Pacific coelenterates.

  • 2000 Curatorial Assistant. California Academy of Sciences. Golden Gate Park San Francisco, CA.  Assisted in data entry of San Francisco Bay collections and determination of invertebrate identifications for database processing and cataloguing.

  • 2000 Workshop Participant. Mariculture and Shore Protection Workshop, Bali Indonesia. Participated in Bio-rock Coral Nurseries for Reef Restoration.

  • 1999 Senior Thesis.  Studied the Existence of the Penasco Least Chipmunk in the Sacramento Mountain Range, Ruidoso, New Mexico.

  • 1998 Biological Technician. National Forest Service Internship Ruidoso , NM.   Monitored and surveyed federally sensitive, threatened and Endangered species in the Smokey Bear and Guadalupe District, including the Mexican Spotted Owl, Northern Goshawk and Kuenzleri Cactus.  Prepared and conducted survey of the endangered Penasco Least Chipmunk population in the Northern Sacramento Mountains. Monitored, documented and measured the water quality on the Ruidoso Watershed. Coordinated, participated  and educated on fishing regulations and fisheries management on National Fishing Day.  Educated on the importance of outreach and marine studies during the NASA Science Camp.

  • 1998 Research Assistant. Environmental Center, University of Hawaii at Manoa, HI.  Researched the project Pollution Prevention (P2) Information Center for insular U.S. territories and the state of Hawaii

    Established the contact personnel from each of the islands.  Learned and worked on the development of a P2 web page that

    provides links with existing data bases containing information on island P2 needs, both in English and Spanish.

  • 1998 Volunteer Biologist. Marine Mammal Stranding Network, San Juan, PR.  Assisted network coordinator in monitoring, feeding and helping injured marine mammals such as whales and dolphins for rehabilitation. Assisted on several autopsies performed.

  • 1998 Scientific SCUBA diver. Participated in surface and underwater beach cleanups sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources in Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

  • 1997 Volunteer Educator. Hanauma Bay Educational Program, Honolulu, HI. Informed visitors and answered questions about coral reef ecology and reef fish of the State Park.  

  • 1996  Field Volunteer.  National Forest Service, San Juan , PR

    Conducted field surveys on historical sites at the El Yunque rainforest and native Puerto Rican flora and fauna.  Documented the impacts of Hurricane Hortense on El Yunque watershedsConducted inventory on potential landslides.  

Teaching

  • 2003. Dive Team Leader, University of Hawaii , Hilo.  Supervised the dive team's collection of data in the field as well as its reduction and analysis.  Assisted in training students in the identification of marine organisms and developing the teams written and oral presentations.

  • 2002-2003 Instructor, Washington State University Pullman, WA Lead educator on the interactions between humans and their environment.
